We encourage and support educational practices that facilitate the development of professional capability alongside academic capability. We promote the development of educational designs that offer a more complete education, that foster a spirit of creative enquiry and enable learners to combine and integrate their learning through academic study, work placement and other experiences of life. We empower talented teachers and students and help them extend their influence.

We are leading the development of a new university award to recognise and value the things that learners do outside their study programme to make their education more complete.

Placement Breakfast – all about the Surrey placement year

SCEPTrE in partnership with the departmental placement teams and Surrey Chamber of Commerce, organised a breakfast meeting on the university campus. This was to publicise to small businesses, the benefits of recruiting a placement student. Forty three business representatives booked to attend.

The session began with two short talks by employers who have placement students on a regular basis:

Discussions were then held around the breakfast table. These were between:

business representatives (who were coming to find out about the professional training scheme),
an ‘employer ambassador’ (who was able to talk about their experience of having a placement student)
a member of university staff (involved in professional training)
a student (who is either currently on placement or who was on a placement last year).

During the round-table discussion, the ambassador and the student with placement experience each gave a five minute explanation of their experience and the benefits to them. The ‘new’ employers were then able to ask questions.

Ten student and employer ambassadors agreed to attend. All four Faculties were represented at the breakfast. Feedback from employer participants was very positive. Eight companies showed an interest in placements after the event by contacting SCEPTrE. Others went directly to the departments.
